With the academic year coming to a close in the next few weeks, it’s time for Southern ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ student-athletes to test their skills at the highest level at the AIA Spring State Championships.Â
Conference play-in games and first-round matches began last week.
Here are the local high schools that made it to the state tournament this spring.
Baseball
Baseball and softball teams are listed in conference order, 6A-2A. All play-in conference games began at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. (May 1 update: Game results are now listed below.)
No. 24 ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ vs. No. 9 Queen Creek at Queen Creek High School
- ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ was defeated by Queen Creek, 2-1.

No. 17 Sunnyside vs. No. 16 Pinnacle at Pinnacle High School
- Sunnyside took down Pinnacle, 6-1, to advance in the 6A tournament.
No. 13 Desert View vs. No. 20 McClintock at Desert View High School
- Desert View defeated McClintock with a big score of 11-3 to advance in the 5A tournament.
No. 17 Walden Grove vs. No. 16 Mica Mountain at Mica Mountain High School
- In the battle of two ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥-area high schools, Mica Mountain took home the W after defeating Walden Grove, 6-3. Mica Mountain will advance in the 4A tournament.
No. 18 Douglas vs. No. 15 Flagstaff at Flagstaff High School
- Douglas was taken down by Flagstaff, 6-1.
No. 21 Cholla vs. No. 12 Yuma at Yuma High School
- Cholla couldn't hold up against Yuma and was run ruled 10-0.
No. 18 Pusch Ridge vs. No. 15 Tanque Verde at Tanque Verde High School
- Pusch Ridge came out on top when these two ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥-area schools went face-to-face. The Lions defeated the Hawks, 3-2.
No. 20 Empire vs. No. 13 Show Low at Show Low High School
- Empire beat Show Low, 5-4, to advance in the 3A tournament.
No. 22 Willcox vs. No. 11 Fountain Hills at McDowell Mountain Elementary School
- Willcox was defeated by Fountain Hills, 11-4.
No. 23 Desert Christian vs. No. 10 Chandler Prep at Tempe Diablo Complex
- Desert Christian lost to Chandler Prep, 12-2.
Softball
No. 20 Marana vs. No. 13 Boulder Creek at Boulder Creek High School

- Marana was defeated by Boulder Creek, 4-0.
No. 24 Flowing Wells vs. No. 9 Casa Grande at Casa Grande Union High School
- Flowing Wells couldn't hold up against Casa Grande and lost 10-0.
No. 18 Buena vs. No. 15 Chaparral at Chaparral High School
- Buena was run ruled by Chaparral, 11-1.
No. 23 Desert View vs. No. 10 Cienega at Cienega High School
- These two ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥-area schools went face-to-face and Cienega came out on top with a 4-1 win over the Jaguars. Cienega will advance in the 5A tournament.
No. 15 Douglas vs. No. 18 Marcos de Niza at Douglas High School
- Douglas took down Marcos de Niza, 5-4, to advance in the 4A tournament.
No. 23 ALA - Queen Creek vs. No. 10 Walden Grove at Walden Grove High School
- Walden Grove defeated ALA - Queen Creek, 6-1, to advance in the 4A tournament.
No. 18 ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Lutheran vs. No. 15 Benson at Benson High School
- Benson took down ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Lutheran with a whopping 15-2 win. They will advance in the 2A tournament.
No. 14 Bisbee vs. No. 19 Many Farms at Bisbee High School
- Bisbee defeated Many Farms, 1-0, to advance in the 2A tournament.
The 1A conference isn’t featured in the state championship conference play-in.
Following the play-in round, the first round of the softball state championship tournament begins on Saturday, May 3.
Boys tennis (team events)
All team events are listed in division order, Div. I-III. The first-round matches began at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. (May 6 update: Match results are now listed below for team, singles and doubles.)
No. 6 Rincon/University vs. Mountain View, Mesa at Rincon/University High School
- Rincon/University defeated Mountain View, Mesa, 5-2, to advance to the quarterfinals on May 7. They will take on Perry High School.
- In the singles event on May 5, Vikram Nerendran took home the state championship title after a 6-4, 6-4 win.
No. 16 Nogales vs. No. 1 Catalina Foothills at Catalina Foothills High School
- Catalina Foothills took down Nogales, 5-0, to advance to the quarterfinals on May 7. Catalina Foothills will play Shadow Mountain.
- Senior Austin Cohen took home the state title with a 6-1, 6-2 win the final round of singles.
- Duo Santiago Astengo and Parker Servoss won the doubles state championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
No. 5 Ironwood Ridge vs. No. 12 Eastmark at Ironwood Ridge High School
- Ironwood Ridge almost took down Eastmark, but the Firebirds took home the win, 5-4.
No. 15 Buena vs. No. 2 Notre Dame Prep at Scottsdale Ranch Park
- Buena couldn't hold up against Notre Dame Prep and fell, 5-0.
No. 16 Tanque Verde vs. Phoenix Country Day at Phoenix Tennis Center
- Tanque Verde was defeated by Phoenix Country Day, 5-0.
No. 12 Willcox vs. No. 5 The Gregory School at Reffkin Tennis Center (Randolph Park)
- The Gregory School walked away with a W after taking down Willcox, 8-1. They advance to take on ALA - West Foothills in the quarterfinals on May 7.
No. 14 Safford vs. No. 3 Pusch Ridge at Hilton El Conquistador ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥
- Pusch Ridge took home the win after defeating Safford, 5-0. The Lions will advance in the quarterfinals to take on Florence on May 7.
No. 10 Sabino vs. No. 7 Glendale Prep at Paseo Racquet Center
- Sabino took down Glendale Prep, 5-4, and will advance in the quarterfinals. They will take on Thatcher on May 7.
- Sabino duo David Gonzalez and Adam Olson won the Div. III doubles state title after a 6-4, 7-6(5) win.
Girls tennis (team events)
All team events are listed in division order, Div. I-III. The first-round matches begin at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 29. (April 30 update: Match results are now below.)
No. 11 Rincon/University vs. No. 6 Hamilton at Hamilton High SchoolÂ
- Hamilton defeated Rincon/University, 5-1, Hamilton advances.
No. 16 Buena vs. No. 1 Salpointe Catholic at Reffkin Tennis Center (Randolph Park)
- Salpointe Catholic defeated Buena, 5-0. Salpointe Catholic advances to take on Catalina Foothills in the quarterfinals on May 6.
- Salpointe Catholic player Lacey Kaufman took home the singles state title with a 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-6 win.
No. 9 Catalina Foothills vs. No. 8 Arcadia at Arcadia High School
- Catalina Foothills took down Arcadia, 5-0, and will face Salpointe Catholic in the quarterfinals on May 6.
No. 14 Ironwood Ridge vs. No. 3 Canyon Del Oro at Canyon Del Oro High School
- Canyon Del Oro defeated Ironwood Ridge, 5-0. Canyon Del Oro advances.
No. 10 ALA - Gilbert North vs. No. 7 Nogales at Nogales High School
- Nogales took down ALA - Gilbert North, 5-3, and will face Notre Dame Prep in the quarterfinals on May 6.
No. 15 Walden Grove vs. No. 2 Notre Dame Prep at Scottsdale Ranch ParkÂ
- Walden Grove lost to Notre Dame Prep, 5-0.
No. 16 The Gregory School vs. No. 1 Cicero Prep at Indian School Park

No. 12 St. John Paul II vs. No. 5 Pusch Ridge at Hilton El Conquistador ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥
- Pusch Ridge took down St. John Paul II, 5-2. The team advances to take on Phoenix Country Day in the quarterfinals on May 6.
- Pusch Ridge duo Estelle Fetsis and Taryn Martin won the doubles state title with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-0 win.
No. 14 Tanque Verde and No. 3 Northland Prep at Hal Jensen Recreation Center
- Tanque Verde lost to Northland Prep, 6-0.
Boys volleyball
6A-4A Boys volleyball play-in matches begin on May 6 at 6 p.m. The 3A tournament (no play-in) begins on May 9.
