The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer:

Adelita Grijalva
In just days, voters in District 7 will decide who they trust to fight for them in Congress. Lately, some have tried to reduce my candidacy to a last name. So let鈥檚 talk about legacy 鈥 and what that really means.
My dad, Congressman Ra煤l Grijalva, left big shoes to fill. I鈥檒l never deny that. He spent his life fighting for justice, for immigrants, for the environment, and for public schools. Every day on the campaign trail, I meet people who tell me how he helped them or inspired them. I鈥檓 proud of that.
My parents knew what they were doing when they named me Adelita. A name that means guerrera, or warrior, an homage to the brave women of the Mexican Revolution who fought shoulder to shoulder with men, refusing to be sidelined.
I carry that warrior name with pride, just as I carry the name Grijalva. For more than two decades, I worked at Pima County Teen Court, helping court-involved youth and their families navigate one of the most difficult moments in their lives. We used restorative justice 鈥 not punishment 鈥 to give young people a second chance. That experience shaped my deep belief that government, when working for the people, can be a force for healing, dignity, and opportunity.

At age 29, I was elected to the 蜜柚直播 Unified School Board, where I served for 20 years. It was an unpaid, volunteer position 鈥 and I showed up year after year, fighting to expand preschool access, defend Mexican-American Studies, and protect bilingual education from political attacks. I believed then 鈥 and still do 鈥 that every child deserves a strong public education, no matter their ZIP code. Most recently, I served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors, where I worked to deliver real results: launching the county鈥檚 first free preschool program, passing historic investments in affordable housing, and protecting the Sonoran Desert for future generations.
If legacy means fighting for the most vulnerable, standing up to corporate greed, defending immigrants, advancing environmental justice and protecting tribal sovereignty, then yes, I wear that legacy with pride. I鈥檓 not a Rockefeller. I鈥檓 a Grijalva from the Southside of 蜜柚直播 and proud of it.
I鈥檓 not in this for fame or fortune. I鈥檓 in this because I鈥檝e lived the struggles I fight for 鈥 and our community deserves a representative with the political backbone and real experience to amplify Southern 蜜柚直播鈥檚 voice and take on this tyrannical administration.
I have to admit, I know my dad would have a good laugh if he heard people calling him 鈥渢he establishment.鈥 The words 鈥淕rijalva鈥 and 鈥渆stablishment鈥 have never been used in the same sentence, unless you insert 鈥渇ighting the鈥 in between. I鈥檓 proud to be endorsed by progressive champions like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, not because of my last name, but because of my record fighting for those without a voice.
This race shouldn鈥檛 be about personality; it should be about policy and who has the courage to make bold, principled decisions when it matters most. Talk is cheap in politics. Anyone can say they鈥檒l fight 鈥 but not everyone has a record of doing it when the stakes are real. The voters deserve a representative with a proven track record of fighting for progressive values, who will stand up to Trump鈥檚 extremism and corporate greed. Someone who will fight to lower costs for working families, defend our public schools, and deliver environmental justice to the communities that need it most. That鈥檚 what I鈥檝e always done 鈥 and that鈥檚 the legacy I鈥檓 proud to continue.
