Once again, President Donald “TACO” Trump has chickened out after pushing ahead with his ill-advised policies and actions.
First, he backed off on tariffs when his plans sent shudders through the bond market and the dollar plummeted. Now, he has decided that he will not detain and deport non-citizen workers in the agriculture, hospitality and meat-packing industries. All it took was rich donors and corporate interests pointing out their businesses will collapse without immigrant labor.
That's a pretty big segment of our economy. We can assume that his big donors in the construction industry will cut the same deal, as 24.7% of its workers are undocumented. Next comes landscaping and roofing.
Who knows? After recognizing that immigrants fill an essential role in our economy, he may have to focus on deporting criminals.
