The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer:

In less than 1/3 of a square mile in our neighborhood we have a liquor store, three bars, a drug rehab clinic, a marijuana dispensary, and as though those were not enough ...
We have had what the city officially calls a 鈥渘uisance drug house鈥 at a rental property in our neighborhood for seventeen years. The police have been unable to do anything. In fact, we were recently tacitly discouraged by the Ward 2 office from talking directly with the police. The Ward 2 office refuses to significantly discuss this issue.
Six years of steadily asking to meet with Ward 2 Councilman Cunningham have resulted in no meeting ever and only one very brief email from him. We also contacted Mayor Romero鈥檚 office and only received a thank you for contacting us. No other reply. We have been clear in our goals to solve the problem and avoid blame or conflict.

We even submitted our three main questions in advance. Please define the term 鈥渘uisance drug house.鈥 What, exactly, are the city鈥檚 policies toward such places? What are the city鈥檚 policies and expectations of the neighbors of a nuisance drug house?
We have since discovered, from a chance conversation with an insurance agent, that there are a number of policies and conditions that affect our situation. When TPD arrests someone, the arrestee must be housed in the Pima County Jail and the city has to pay for that. TPD also has a system of prioritizing types of calls. These conditions and other policies control how the 蜜柚直播 Police are allowed to view these 鈥渘uisance drug houses.鈥
It would have gone a very long way toward building confidence and good relations with our elected officials to even have a short discussion regarding this issue. Not one bit of what we know has come from open and transparent communications between we, the people, and even a single representative in out city government. We have had to trust to serendipity, not the city, what we have been able to discover.
Seventeen years of crime. Six years of trying to apply pressure to the city for a resolution. Always avoidance by the leaders who are supposed to protect us. The same ones who always speak of the 鈥渉onor and privilege to serve.鈥
This is only part of the story. But it raises vital questions. Particularly about the nature of the relationship between elected officials, their notions of who has value, the rule of law, and the concept of 鈥渃onstituent.鈥
Our Ward 2 Councilman doesn鈥檛 answer everyone鈥檚 questions. Certainly none of ours. None. We in this neighborhood view his lack of concern as tacit permission from the city to operate an ongoing criminal enterprise. For seventeen years! During his entire time in office, Mr. Cunningham has been unable or unwilling to address this problem in any meaningful way.
It is alleged that the Ward 2 office views myself as a crank (there are 11 of us). His office may possibly be avoiding us on that basis. Like the drug house, this hasn鈥檛 been denied. The problem with that practice is that no one in his office is a qualified mental health professional. Therefore, they may be denying at least one constituent services based on a lay perception of illness or disability. In other words, they decide who is 鈥渃razy鈥 and who gets equal protection of the law. Not the doctors, not the courts.
Safe neighborhoods, open communication with our representatives, and transparency in our government are absolutely necessary. Seeming contempt for the people, as with having to live with a drug house, is patently unacceptable.
Seventeen years! How? Why?
