St. Mary’s Hospital is celebrating its 145th year in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥.
on Wednesday revealed Legacy Wall, an art installation of photos and history.
This 1900 photo shows St. Marys Hospital on the left. The Round Building, which was the sanatorium, is on the right. The adobe bricks at the bottom are the remains of the orphanage.
“This is an exciting moment for Carondelet Health Network associates and leadership. We’re very proud of carrying on the work of the Seven Sisters of St. Joseph Of Carondelet who brought Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital — the first hospital in the state — into existence,†Monica Vargas-Mahar, the market chief executive officer, said in a written statement.
“Their fortitude in working to help those in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ gain medical treatment is truly inspiring.â€
Lora Mott, nursing director of behavioral health takes a look at the new art installation at St. Mary’s Hospital on Wednesday called the Legacy Wall, which uses photos to capture key moments in the hospital’s 145th year in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥.
A news release cited some notable moments for the hospital over the years:
- April 24, 1880, Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital officially opened to serve the fast-growing ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ region — with a population of just over 7,000.
- St. Mary’s School of Nursing graduated its first class in 1918.
- In 1941, the first use of nuclear medicine in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ was performed when Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital’s doctors used a radioactive isotope to diagnose and treat a thyroid disorder.

- In 1959, Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital acquired a heart-lung machine, and surgeons performed ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥â€™s first open heart surgery on an 8-year-old girl.
- In 1980, Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the United States to open a hospice unit.

Last year, the hospital and El Rio Health partnered to expand access for comprehensive behavioral health services. And also in 2024, the hospital was the first in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ to invest in the da Vinci 5 medical robot for use in surgeries.
