Oro Valley Police have released details about a fatal golf cart collision that killed an elderly pedestrian in March.
Thomas Tjossem, 72, was taking his daily walk about 7 p.m. on March 15 when he was struck by a golf cart. The collision caused him to fall to the ground, causing serious head injuries, police reports recently released show.
That golf cart was traveling with no headlights and on the wrong side of the street when Tjossem was struck, police said. The Star is withholding the name of the driver because no charges have been filed in the crash.
The driver made a sharp left-hand turn to head west on Del Webb Boulevard, putting him on the wrong side of the road.
The driver later told police his home was three houses away on the same side of the road, so he “always drives that way,†a police report says. He also said he was aware the lights were not working.

The driver said he struck Tjossem as he was crossing Del Webb Boulevard from southbound Chisholm Lane. He told police he was driving between 10 and 15 miles per hour at the time.
When paramedics arrived, Tjossem was lying just in front of the golf cart. Paramedics noted a large laceration on the back of his head, and he was taken to the hospital.
He died the next day.
A woman, identified as Tjossem’s wife, arrived on the scene shorty after her husband was transferred. She said Tjossem had gone for his daily walk and had not come home. She went out looking for him and came upon the scene, where she was directed to the hospital.
Field sobriety tests and a blood-alcohol screen showed no impairment, police said.
The investigation continues.
