A civilian driver was shot and killed early Friday morning after attempting to illegally enter Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, military officials say.
The unidentified person was fatally shot about 2:30 a.m. after failing to stop and identify themselves at the main gate on South Craycroft Road, according to the public affairs office at Davis-Monthan. The main gate is immediately south of East Golf Links Road.
A member of the 355th Security Forces Squadron shot the driver after the person crashed into a vehicle barrier, then put the vehicle into reverse, the news release said.
The driver died at the crash scene, the release said.
“We certainly regret the loss of life that occurred early this morning,“ said Col. Jose Cabrera, commander of the 355th Wing. “Our Defenders have a very difficult job and acted in accordance with their training and policy to ensure the security of the installation and safety of our Airmen.â€

The incident is currently under investigation. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is the lead agency in the probe.
