ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois was prepared for the House committee settlement last week, one that allows each school to pay athletes up to $20.5 million next year. She has arranged for the UA main campus to offer a class (one-hour credit) in financial management for athletes. The class will be designed to teach athletes about taxes, legal implications of NIL contracts and personal finance. Maybe they should add one more. Given the crowded parking issues on the UA campus, those athletes driving (new) cars should be taught the penalties of a parking ticket, having your car towed and how all parking tickets must be paid before an athlete can register for school. My painful memories of college parking issues are still active.
– Hope Hisey, ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥â€™s 2023 All-Pac-12 soccer goalie from CDO, has completed her first full season of professional soccer, and it was highly successful. Hisey played for the Spokane Zephyr of the new USL Super League, and led the league with 70 saves and was also first in saves percentage, 77%. Hisey now has six weeks off before she reports for Spokane’s season No. 2 in the USL Super League.

– Sad to hear that ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ defensive lineman Keith Moody, 60, an all-state recruit from Mesa Mountain View in 1982, died last week in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥. Moody had been a pastor and also worked in medical sales. He was part of a strong UA defensive line of 1987, Dick Tomey’s first season at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥, that included Dana Wells, Brad Henke and Reggie Gaddis. Services for Moody, who chose ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ over offers from BYU, ASU and Washington, will be June 21 at 11 a.m., at the Calvary Christian Fellowship of ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ facility, 3850 N. Commerce Drive.
– Former Salpointe Catholic all-city quarterback Treyson Bourguet finds himself in a potential battle to be BYU’s No. 1 quarterback this season. Bourguet, who played at Western Michigan in 2022 and 2023, spent last season redshirting at BYU. He appeared to become BYU’s No. 2 quarterback in spring practice, after which starter Jake Retzlaff became the object of a civil lawsuit in Salt Lake City, accused of assaulting a woman a year earlier. Retzlaff’s status is uncertain. Bourguet would be the third ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥an to start for BYU since 1990, joining Santa Rita High receiver Eric Drage and Sabino tight end Matt Bushman.
– Richard Jefferson’s first season as ESPN/ABC’s lead analyst for the NBA — a job he shares with Doris Burke — has been impressive. The only drawback is that play-by-play man Mike Breen talks over Jefferson and Burke too often. Jefferson’s contract expires this season, and NBA sources have written that Jefferson is being targeted by Amazon Prime Video to be one of its lead voices when it expands its NBA coverage next year. Jefferson is part of a legacy of broadcasters produced by Lute Olson’s ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ program, a long line of TV voices that includes Steve Kerr, Miles Simon, Matt Muehlebach, Corey Williams, Sean Elliott, Tom Tolbert, Reggie Geary and Channing Frye.
